Aquatic Conservation Taskforce - ACT!
The Aquatic Conservation Task Force - ACT was formed in 2008 by the Town Council. The Committee’s mission is to evaluate
and implement ways to combat and control Milfoil in Lake Luzerne. The Committee’s mission is to evaluate and implement ways to
combat and control Milfoil in Lake Luzerne. The "Milfoil Pirates" made a lot of progress in 2007 - ACT will carry
on their mission in 2008 and thereafter!!!
Imagine if our lake looked like that in the picture to the right. In fact some would say the south end already looks like
this in late summer. Boating, fishing, and especially swimming become very unpleasent. Property owners become frustrated,
and values decline. Will you tolerate this in Lake Luzerne?
The problem is Milfoil - short for Eurasian Water Milfoil -
just what it sounds like, a plant that has invaded us from Europe and Asia.
You've heard the name before - it's what our
"Pirates" were fighting last year. It's what you, your neighbor, the businesses in town, and everyone else has to get excited
about.
Lake Luzerne has been invaded - we must ACT!
If you have been out on the lake in recent years, you have seen more and more of this stuff. A tangled mass of feathery
fronds that grows in water anywhere from 3 to 15 feet deep. It's always in shallow water - but that includes all the shoreline
- the inlet - the outlet - the whole south end! Imagine what the lake will look like if we don't stop it!!
Only with your
support, both time and money, can we lick this invader.
